A feature that really shines for me in the game setup is how history can be controlled. Players will be able to set difficulty, troop recovery time, whether yours and other AI-controlled officers in the game will grow or not, the lifespan of characters (whether that be historical, long-lived or unable to die at all), and you can even control the role that female officers will have in the game. Not only can you select how the game scenario will play out but you will also be able to choose an officer based either on the recommended character for the period, or a historical character.
In the main mode the number of customisation options before you even get started in-game is immense. Players may take whatever path they wish to get there but if your character dies or the game clock reaches 350 AD, it will be game over. In the main mode players will have a choice of scenario ranging in years from 184 to 227 AD, with the ultimate goal to unify all of China. Depending on whom you pick and the challenge you are after you will have access to a number of the game’s mechanics. Main mode allows you to take control of an officer and actually play the game as it was designed, in all of its complexity and turn-based goodness. It’s a really easy, yet enjoyable way to learn about some of the main characters whilst also getting a feel for how it all works. Hero mode lets you follow the story of individual characters in the game while teaching you about the mechanics and aims. There are two main modes within the game, Hero mode and Main mode. With the ability to choose from over 700 officers, from the lowest rent-boy to the ruler of the kingdom, the choice is completely in your hands. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XII gets a 8/10 (Very Good) It may lack the grand production values, but it makes up for this with some exquisitely rich ideas and a tight gameplay structure that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. Romance of the Three Kingdoms XII is a great way to get back into strategy games from a different perspective, if any players have been burned out after the disappointments of Civilization: Beyond Earth and Total War: Rome II. Besides for this, the soundtrack is definitely underrated contender for some of the best stuff I’ve heard this year, and fit’s very well with the themes the game presents. Unfortunately, the game is not fully localized down to the voice acting, but this makes sense due to the heavy amounts of lore.
There also isn’t much graphical variety in the gameplay, but visually everything else feels fresh and exciting, which is a weird offset. It’s zoomed out and sometimes bothersome, and can lead to the wrong instances of split second decisions if you aren’t experienced enough. On top of the game’s storytelling already being interesting, it’s mostly finely tuned in the presentationĪs great as R omance of Three Kingdoms XIII can be, I found it’s biggest flaw to be in the camera system. So does the newest Romance of Three Kingdoms succeed as a rare example of differentiation, or buckle under the pressure. It’s rare to see a company not only go all in with niche strategy titles, but also support them in prevailing ways. Well good old Tecmo had their translating go with it, and now the official version is out on Playstation 4 and PC. That’s why it was all the more shocking when Romance of Three Kingdoms XIII launched on Steam earlier this year, without localizations, and with a ludicrous $90 price tag. They may not appeal to everyone, but their boundaries are undoubtedly checked. In many ways, it’s downright surprising how diverse the company can get. How about a Total War like strategical adventure on console? Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence may just do the trick. Want a crazy, action packed third person historical brawler? There are numerous Dynasty Warriors games to fit your fancy.
Want a fighter with style and some sexuality? Pick Dead or Alive, with it’s beach volleyball counterparts adding even more of that.
Koei Tecmo have always been the kings of niche gaming.
